Volvo's new EX60 electric SUV promises to 'end range anxiety' — and is built with Nvidia and Google tech

Last June, the midsize XC60 became Volvo's best-selling vehicle. More than 2.7 million drivers worldwide have purchased the luxury SUV.

First launched in 2008 as a fuel-efficient crossover, the XC60 has since overtaken the 240 — Volvo's long-time best-selling sedan and wagon. Hybrid versions followed in 2017.

The upcoming EX60 is nearly identical in size to the XC60, but Volvo says the similarities end there: the electric SUV is built on a different platform and designed as a distinct vehicle from the ground up.

A massive barrier to EV adoption has been range anxiety — a fear that a car's battery will run out of power before drivers reach their destination or closest charging station.

Volvo says the EX60 is designed to put that concern to rest. Built on the company's third-generation battery — called the SPA3 architecture — it offers more range than any other Volvo EV.

The electric SUV will be offered in three trims. The dual-motor P12 AWD delivers the longest range at 400 miles. The all-wheel-drive P10 is rated for 320 miles, while the rear-wheel-drive P6 offers 310 miles on a full charge.

"With this car, we remove all remaining obstacles for going electric," CEO Håkan Samuelsson said in a press release.

The EX60 comes with a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port — the same plug used by Tesla. That allows the electric SUV to tap directly into Tesla's Supercharger network.

Rivals are racing to expand their own charging infrastructure. But Tesla still operates the largest charging network in the US, a meaningful advantage for EV buyers worried about where they'll plug in.

Volvo also says charging is fast. The automaker claims the battery can add 211 miles of range in 10 minutes when plugged into a 400kW station.

The new Volvo leans heavily into its tech. The car features two screens — one behind the steering wheel and another on the dash — for mapping, safety indicators, climate controls, and audio adjustments.

There are no buttons on the center dash.

Volvo says drivers will be able to use voice commands that will filter through Google's Gemini AI assistant.

The EX60 showcases technology from two of Volvo's most important partners: Nvidia and Google.

Nvidia provides the computing power behind Volvo's driver-assistance systems, including Pilot Assist features such as lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control. Launch versions of the EX60 will not offer full self-driving capabilities, though Volvo has said it plans to expand its autonomous features over time.

Google's role is more visible to drivers. Volvo has partnered with the tech giant since 2017, but the EX60 represents the most advanced iteration of that relationship so far. The vehicle integrates Google-powered AI agents designed to remember driver preferences and respond to natural-language commands.

Drivers can, for example, ask the EX60 to read an unopened email aloud — and the system will handle the request without the need to touch a screen.

The EX60 features a slim, fin-like door handle mounted onto the window trim. Pressing a button on the handle activates an electronic latch, while mechanical backups remain inside the door. Pulling the handle past a certain point from the interior actives the mechanical backup.

Door handles have become a quiet design challenge for EV makers. Traditional protruding handles can hurt aerodynamics and shave miles off a vehicle's range, pushing automakers to experiment with sleeker — and sometimes riskier — alternatives.

Tesla, for example, relies on fully electronic door handles, a design that has drawn scrutiny from federal regulators after some drivers reported difficulty opening doors following crashes.

Volvo has taken a more cautious approach, pairing an aerodynamic design with redundant mechanical systems. It's similar to the front door handles found on Ford's Mustang Mach-E.

The EX60 also gets some extra storage for long trips. The area under the hood has a three-cubic-foot, plastic-lined storage area. That's about the same size as a standard American microwave.

The EX60 will launch the off-road-ready Cross Country trim in 2028. Volvo says the option will get power from two electric motors. On the exterior, it features tougher metal skid plates on its bumpers and a one-inch suspension lift to help clear rocks.

Assembly for the luxury SUV will start this spring. The first units will roll onto dealerships in Europe, with the next round of EX60s reaching US lots by the summer.

Pricing for the electric crossover are expected to range from $55,000 to around $70,000.

Volvo didn't respond to Business Insider's request for comment in this story.

There are several new entrants to the EV market this year. Multiple are direct competitors to the EX60.

BMW, for example, is launching the iX3. It also boasts a 400-mile range and similar pricing. The German luxury carmaker also has plans for major battery and tech advancements, including inductive charging that can re-juice the car's battery without a plug.

Mercedes' GLC will also hit showroom floors around the same time. It is another 400-mile crossover EV with an expected mid-$50,000 starting price.

Tesla's Model Y, Cadillac's Optiq and Lyriq, Rivian's R2, Audi's Q4 E-Tron, Porsche's Cayenne Electric Turbo, Polestar's 3, Lexus' RZ, and Acura's ZDX are all competing for the same price range and luxury-electric crossover space in 2026.
